as the moon lowers
its staircase of echoes
two bats spiral up

This poem was written in response to Carpe Diem Special #170 Michael Dylan Welch’s 1st roar of the midway, another great prompt from Chèvrefeuille at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. All of the poems in the link-up can be read here. And, to finish, here’s the Kings of Leon –
Wow…. this image leaves me quite speechless …. I do like the staircase of echoes!!!! And the bats make an appearance — so what’s not to like about this haiku! 😀
Thanks, Jen. Yes, this haiku was drafted in the summer when I was watching my bats a-hunting. But I only got it into shape after I read the prompt. They do seem to be darting up and down a winding staircase, at times.. Glad you liked it 🙂
Oh, very much –!
I like this haiku a lot Blake … two images making each other stronger. Very well done.
Thanks, Chèvrefeuille. It took a while to come together but the CDHK prompt made me revisit the haiku, so I’m glad you like it.
I like the image but even more the sound, each stair is a different note in their calling.
Ah I did enjoy watching the bats swoop around my garden so dramatically during the summer. It felt like a privilege to be entertained by them of an evening.
I am not that brave, I`m afraid, I will look at them at the Biodome behind a screen…lol
Oh no, you really need the bats to be flapping just a little above your head, so you can hear their squeaks as they pass 🙂
