winter starts
to blink this sleepy solstice
from frosty eyes
from frosty eyes
a silver squirrel sees new year
blink a little

This poem was written in response to Carpe Diem #631, winter solstice, candles, another great prompt hosted by Chèvrefeuille at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. All of the poems in the link-up can be read here.
Oh! Two treats from Blake today! 🙂
In the second, it’s as if you’re inviting *us* to blink a little, let the veil dissolve a bit and imagine — and is the squirrel blinking, or is the new year blinking when we do so? Very nicely done. And such wonderful play with “winter starts”, too —!
Oh yeah, I hadn’t noticed that the “blink a little” might be an invitation.. Thanks 😀
With “winter starts” I did think it might look a little clumsy to the casual reader, but then I thought “ah well, Jen will realise that it’s not” 😉
No, not clumsy at all —- quite expert, if a person takes the time to think about what they’re reading. 🙂
And I suspect that I miss fully a third of the tricks and images and metaphors in your haiku. You’re quite the expert, even though you claim not to be! 🙂
Hmm I suspect you’re using “expert” as euphemistically as you used “paradox” a few days ago 😛
Now, now…. I mean both as compliments!
Oh, I know. And I really appreciate the positivity 🙂
Always ready to be coach and/ or cheerleader, whichever is more helpful 😉
But really — i envy your writing talent!!!
Oh a coach is always more helpful. Cheerleaders are another thing we never had over here, so I never really understand the appeal – apart from the outfits 🙂
I don’t understand about the cheerleaders either …. Costumes? Yeah … Perhaps … Um … I’ll take your word for it! 😉
Relieved about the coach vs cheerleader thing though… Pirates look pretty silly with pleated skirts and pom poms. :O
😀 It is a pretty great image, though – the Jolly Roger as the skull and pom poms, maybe…
It makes me think of Stardust, in which Robert de Niro plays a cross-dressing pirate captain. So, it can be done!
“Can be” versus “should be”, right? 😉
Well sure, it’s maybe not for everyone 😀
😉
… and stopping by at an earlier comment, briefly – after all the gorgeous poems I’ve read of yours I really don’t think you need to waste much time envying anyone’s talent, Jen. Hey, you rock! 😉
Aw, shucks 🙂
Thanks Blake —
