This poem was written in response to Carpe Diem #622, Solitude (Kodoku), another great prompt hosted by Chèvrefeuille at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. All of the poems in the link-up can be read here. And here, to explain some of the paradoxes of solitude, is Elvis –

  1. Holy cats! Dude was actually crying while he sang it. Wow. I prefer ol’ Hank’s version, but we’ll give Elvis some credit for that much, at least. [Thangyuvurrymuch, he says.]

    But anyway — I love this thoughtful, almost literary take on the prompt. Very nice!

    • Yes, I was thinking “what’s the lonesomest song I know?” And since I seemed to be talking to myself like a cowboy, it reminded me of Hank 🙂 As you say, the original can’t be bettered but I’d never heard Elvis sing it, so went with this. Plus, shockingly, Elvis hasn’t appeared on Sweet FA before!

      “Literary” – again, I agree with your astute observation. It made me think of the start of a play, kind of.
