Faces Flash

faces flash by

on this wintry road we’re on

and stay strangers

This poem was written in response to Carpe Diem Special #120, Richard Wright’s “their watching faces,” another great prompt hosted by Chèvrefeuille at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. All of the poems in the link-up can be read here. Since the haiku has a fairly chilly, isolated feel about it, I thought it’d be nice to finish with music that gives a warm and fuzzy feeling.

  1. Hopefully this isn’t a duplicate comment. Dratted WP!

It’s really interesting how you’ve turned Wright’s “slight recognition” on the Autumn road into “no recognition” on the wintry road. Such a slight switch – with a tremendous result. Nicely done!

And I’m so glad you ended with some Sly 😉
Great memories, there — LOVED Soul Train as a kid. Had a killer intro, too, didn’t it? 😉

    • Oh I’ve never seen Soul Train – it never made it over here, but it looks fantastic! Allowing Sly to let the song go sprawling like that into such a loose jam… glorious – I’ll have to watch it again now 🙂

And yes, this is probably one of the first times I’ve really tried to stay close to the feel of the original, whereas before I’ve mostly been pleased if I could gather three decent-sounding lines together 😉
