eager fur
laced with dew and shreds of red

This poem was written for Carpe Diem Special #119, Tomas Tranströmer’s 5th “a wild boar plays the organ”, in which Chèvrefeuille asked us to write a fairytale-like haiku in response to one by Tranströmer. All of the poems in the link-up can be read here. For some reason, I feel like pairing this poem with Girls Talk by Elvis Costello, so here it is.
Oh dear — I was giving this a very dungeony interpretation – and then I see in your tags that it’s Red Riding Hood. Which is dark, don’t get me wrong — but — well — maybe I’ll just say I really liked this, and then duck out the door. And I did like it … but … ahem.
Well……… do you know Angela Carter’s writing? She reworked a number of fairy tales, bringing out the psycho-sexual elements with a feminist perspective. Her best stories are excellent and, since this was a fairy tale prompt, I thought I’d try to boil down those elements into 3 lines 🙂
Frankly, Red Riding Hood is as dungeony as it gets 😉
I have not read Angela Carter — but she’s definitely on my list now 😉
